About CATENA

Central Asia is one of the tectonically most active regions on Earth. Its climate is mainly influenced by the two weather systems Westerlies and Monsoon. CaTeNA investigates the two most important natural hazards that occur under these boundary conditions: earthquakes and mass movements.

The project aims at 1) understanding the tectonic framework under which earthquakes in Central Asia occur and 2) understanding the trigger, conditions and control parameters of mass movements (landslides, rock avalanches) and 3) estimating the resulting risk. The results form the basis to better assess the hazards due to earthquakes and mass movements in Central Asia and therefore be able to take measures to mitigate consequences.

Here we present a landslide susceptibility and risk model, which allows to estimate extent and distribution of damages. This model is able to integrate dynamic data streams like earthquake induced shaking estimates and rainfall or snow melt events.

CaTeNA is a project within the CLIENT II program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
